The Complete React Native + Hooks Course (Udemy.com)
Understand React Native with Hooks, Context, and React Navigation.

Our take
Based on the ratings of 45,638 students, a sample of their written reviews and the syllabus, as the course stood in December 2025. No course pays to be reviewed.
Stephen Grider's React Native course has been on Udemy since 2016 and has picked up nearly 200,000 students and about 45,600 reviews along the way. The syllabus runs 38 hours across 428 lectures, and it builds from JSX and state up to navigation, Context, a custom Express API and a long in-app authentication section. It's meant for people who already know basic JavaScript and want to ship mobile apps, not for anyone hoping to learn programming from scratch.
Reviewers are consistent on two points. The teaching is excellent: he explains why each change to the code is needed, and one reviewer says he explains things in an unusually beginner-friendly way this time. The complaint is that the tooling has drifted. Low-star reviews describe dependency errors on the very first starter project, deprecated packages, a navigation library that no longer works, and text cards inserted mid-course asking students to patch the code shown on screen. One reviewer mentions poor video quality and another a lack of instructor answers in the Q&A. Roughly 2 percent of ratings are one or two stars, but almost all of them say the same thing: outdated.
The last-update date says December 2025, and one recent reviewer found the dependencies fresher than expected, so refreshes are happening, just not everywhere. Eleven hours of old-version lectures still sit at the end, which explains the 38-hour runtime. It's a good buy for anyone willing to fix package versions themselves in exchange for explanations reviewers rate highly. Anyone who needs a project that compiles on day one should look at the neighboring CLI course, which advertises a 2026 refresh in its title.
Pros
- Explains why each code change is needed, so concepts stick rather than just being copied
- Long sections on Context state management and in-app authentication with a custom Express API
- One reviewer had a working setup in under 10 minutes; source code is provided for every lecture
- Nearly 200,000 students and a 4.6 rating from about 45,600 reviews
Cons
- Many 2025 and 2026 reviews report broken starter projects, deprecated packages and a dead navigation library
- Text cards inserted mid-course ask students to patch the video's code, which some found confusing
- Eleven hours of old-version React Native lectures pad the 38-hour runtime
It's very good, but the fact it's so outdated is really annoying.
Listed as all levels, but the requirements assume basic JavaScript; prior React knowledge helps but isn't needed.

Course Description
If you're tired of spinning your wheels learning Swift or Android, this is the course for you.
Authentication? You will learn it. Hooks? Included. Navigation? Of course!
This course will get you up and running with React Native quickly, and teach you the core knowledge you need to deeply understand and build React components for mobile devices.
Both OSX and Windows supported - develop iOS or Android!
This course includes content on both v0.62.2 and the legacy v0.30.x, which is widely used in industry.
We'll start by mastering the fundamentals of React, including JSX, “props", “state", and event handling. Source code is provided for each lecture, so you will always stay up-to-date with the course pacing. Special attention has been paid to creating reusable components that you'll be able to make use of on your own fantastic projects.
React Native is an excellent solution for developing apps on mobile in a fraction of the time it takes to make an equivalent iOS or Swift app. You'll love seeing your changes instantly appear on your own device, rather than waiting for Swift/Java code to recompile! This quick feedback loop, along with excellent cross platform support, is what has catapulted React Native to the top must-have skill for Javascript engineers.
If you are new to React, or if you've been working to learn it but sometimes feel like you still don't quite 'get it', this is the React course for you! To learn React you have to understand it.
Learn how to use React's custom markup language, JSX, to clean up your Javascript code
Master the process of breaking down a complex component into many smaller, interchangeable components
Grasp the difference between “props" and “state" and when to use each
Render interactive, media-rich components in beautifully styled apps
Develop apps that are unique, fun, and responsive
Build on both Android and iOS platforms
Master integration with Firebase for user authentication
Learn the core principles of navigation with React Native
I've built the course that I would have wanted to take when I was learning React Native. A course that explains the concepts and how they're implemented in the best order for you to learn and deeply understand them.

Excellent explanations from the instructor as usual, but this time, he explains so beginner friendly. So if you think you are not very good with Teact.js but you find yourself learning React native, this seems to be the best course for you.

The best part of this course was the lecturer - Stephen is a great instructor! The biggest issue I had was the time necessary for installation of the modules required and then syncing them together (some have moved libraries or been deleted). The syntax is also a problem, because much of the syntax has changed and the course material is behind.

It's very good, but the fact it's so outdated is really annoying. I had to do the entire thing with Leaflet Map instead of Map View, and it was hard as hell! If the instructor could redo some parts, it would be the best RN tutorial hands down!

Nice course to learn really from basics to bigConcepts. Also, working with Old versions of React-native is good learning experience for me as I've encountered the same in my professional work.

This course is very well explained. Stephen tells you why changes to the base code are necessary and why we need them. Having said that this course is designed for everyone wanting to enhance their react knowledge. Five stars no doubt about it!

Teaching style is awesome. Feels P2P studying. Interactive too. Everything is not possible to include in course but just hope if he can include push notification and camera usage in course which are now very basic.

Yes. Had to bounce around a bit to get a good understanding. I did chose to use latest version of react-navigation - glad now but was difficult to get some things to work.

Most comprehensive React Native course I've seen. The instructor explains everything in detail and makes sure you understand what each line of code does. Perfect for React Native beginners.

This is THE BEST course that I've ever had at Udemy. Great course. The videos are very, very well explained. I would only like also to seen more complex app situations, I mean get deaper....

Everything is extremely understandable. Quite good. This is my first experience in udemy, so nothing to compare. I liked this. Definitely going to watch all the video tutorials and implement them simultanously.
